Longtime sheriff’s deputy placed on leave after he’s arrested in another county on suspicion of DUI: Reports

Authorities in South Carolina say an off-duty sheriff’s deputy was arrested earlier this week on suspicion of driving his personal vehicle while under the influence.

According to WPDE, Richard Powell has been placed on administrative leave from his position with the Charleston County Sheriff’s Office.

He had reportedly been an employed by the law-enforcement agency for about 24 years at the time of his arrest on Friday night.

The deputy was allegedly traveling in Dorchester County when he was pulled over by authorities, as reported by WCIV.

Police reports show he was taken into the custody of the South Carolina Highway Patrol and booked into Dorchester County Detention Center. He is expected to face a criminal charge of DUI, according to a statement by Charleston County Sheriff’s Capt. Roger Antonio.

Powell’s employer confirmed he would remain on leave with pay until an internal affairs investigation into the allegation has concluded.
