Mom stabs toddler to death less than a day after being released from mental health facility: Report

A 2-year-old child is dead and his mother is facing premeditated murder charges as she recovers from self-inflicted injuries.

WDIV reports that Chunhui Shi’s husband returned to their home in Novi, Michigan, after work on Friday to find his son’s body and his wife in a bedroom in the home. The toddler was pronounced dead, and Shi, 36, remains in police custody in a hospital.

Authorities believe Shi fatally stabbed her son before turning the knife on herself. According to the report, she had a history of mental illness, and had been released from a mental health facility the day before the murder. The report indicates that she was at the facility for less than a day.

Originally from China, Shi reportedly returned there in September for mental health treatment, but it is not clear how long she was gone.

The mother is now facing multiple charges including premeditated first-degree murder, felony murder, and first-degree child abuse, according to WDIV.

Police have reportedly recovered the murder weapon. Shi was ordered held without bond and is next due in court on January 15.
