Dad under ‘major duress’ kills wife, young daughter, and then himself: Report

Three family members in Mount Vernon, New York, are dead in an apparent murder-suicide.

LoHud reports that police found the man, woman, and preteen girl dead of gunshot wounds at a home early Sunday morning. An upstairs neighbor had heard shouting coming from the home, but reportedly could not decipher what was being said. According to the report, police believe the man killed his wife and daughter before taking his own life.

Authorities have not yet released the names of the victims, but Michel Richard Sylvain identified himself to LoHud as the brother of the deceased man, and said that he arrived at the scene but that police would not let him into the residence. Sylvain said he had spoken to the neighbor about what she had heard.

She “couldn’t understand what they’re talking about and she went back upstairs,” the neighbor reportedly told the brother. It is unclear if police were called by the same neighbor or someone else.

Mount Vernon is in Weschester County, which was the first area in New York State to see a spike in community-spread coronavirus cases. There is no indication the family was impacted by the virus that causes COVID-19, but Mayor Shawyn Patterson-Howard reportedly said on her weekly show that the man who pulled the trigger was “under major duress.”
