WATCH LIVE: Opening statements in Derek Chauvin murder trial

Attorneys will give their opening statements to jurors Monday in the murder trial of the former Minneapolis police officer charged with killing George Floyd.

Chauvin is charged with second-degree murder, third-degree murder, and second-degree manslaughter for the death of the unarmed man, who died in May 2020 after Chauvin knelt on his neck for several minutes. Floyd’s arrest–for allegedly using a counterfeit bill at a grocery store–was caught on police bodycam video and sparked worldwide protests against police brutality.

The murder trial is starting on schedule after 11 days of jury selection that ended last week.
