Mom wakes up to find 4-year-old son dangling from hole in apartment floor after dog falls in: Report

A Georgia mother is demanding answers after she woke up in her apartment to find her young son dangling from a hole in the floor.

CBS 46 reports that Birdesha Weldon, who’s a resident at the Abernathy apartment complex in Sandy Springs, was petrified when she saw her 4-year-old hanging on to the ledge of a hole that dropped 10-feet deep inside her living room.

Weldon said she quickly grabbed the boy and safely pulled him up, but their dog, Milo, was inside the hole after he fell through. The dog and the boy are now both OK; the fire department treated them for minor injuries.

“I could literally see him shaking. He was like mommy, ‘I almost died’ and I was like, ‘thank God you didn’t.'”

Records reportedly show that Weldon had already made several complaints about the flooring, which started back in December 2020. Weldon added that apartment complexes have slowed down repairs since the COVID-19 pandemic, but she blames it on the state for allegedly having less oversight.

Renters have the right to file a lawsuit against landlords and property management companies if repairs aren’t done within a reasonable amount of time. Georgia’s legal aid, however, reportedly said that each incident goes on a case-by-case basis and depends on the circumstances surrounding the repairs.

After the incident, the management company repaired the floor immediately. Weldon, however, said that four months is way too long for management to respond.

“He’s my responsibility. If anything happens to my son, I don’t know what I’ll do. So the simple things– like ‘hey I’m paying my rent and I’ve never been late–come fix the stuff. That’s y’all job,” Weldon said.
