‘As close to death as you can get’: Aspiring ESPN Reporter Nearly Kills 1-year-old While Babysitting, Police Say

A Georgia babysitter and aspiring sports reporter has been arrested for allegedly nearly killing an infant earlier this year, police say.

According to Gainesville Police Department, 23-year-old Abby Elizabeth Chosewood was babysitting a 1-year-old in February when she allegedly attacked the victim, nearly causing death.

“In February 2023, Chosewood allegedly suffocated and/or strangled a one-year-old child causing bodily harm,” Gainesville Police Department said on Facebook post.

Police said it took several months to gather evidence against Chosewood, including the time frame that the victim had been injured, which reportedly matched the dates that Chosewood had been babysitting.

Gainesville Police Lt. Kevin Holbrook told Law&Crime’s Sidebar podcast that the the victim was was left with multiple injuries after the incident and had petechiae and bruising, brought about by a “strangulation-type” injury.

“This is a case in which the child was probably as close to death as you can get,” Holbrook said. “The child received numerous injuries, numerous broken bones to include a femur. A femur is one of the strongest bones we have in our bodies.”

Holbrook, according to Law & Crime, said the baby’s parents did not have nanny cams installed in the home, and that Chosewood was a friend of the family.

“We don’t know exactly what happened in that house, and we’ll probably never know. And we’re just hoping that it didn’t occur to any other children,” Holbrook said.

Chosewood’s personal website indicates that she attended Georgia Southern University and aspires to be a sideline reporter for ESPN or a sports journalist.

Court records state that she’s been in legal trouble before, AJC reports. She admitted to stealing someone’s debit card and making illegal online purchases for herself in April 2021. She was subsequently sentenced to two years probation in Bulloch County.

“Many times in interviews you can talk to someone and you can somewhat feel the sympathy… this is one of those cases where I wouldn’t use that word,” Holbrook added. “That’s something that she’ll have to answer for in court and she’ll have her day in court.”

Chosewood is facing one count of felonious assault for the latest incident. She was arrested and taken to the Hall County jail but has since been released on bail.
