Missing 5-year-old Boy Found Dead, No Calls to Police Until Hour After Disappearance: HCSO

A 5-year-old Texas boy who reportedly wandered away from his home Thursday has been found dead in a Houston pond.

According to the Harris County Sheriff’s Office, Los Jones disappeared from his home off Longhorn Run Lane Thursday afternoon, possibly after climbing through his bedroom window. Neighbors told police that security footage captured Jones running down the street at around 1:15 p.m.

Police were alerted at 2:35 p.m. and units began searching for him around four minutes later. Maj. Earl Dean with HCSO said Los could have been missing for up to an hour before someone called police for help, Click2Houston reports.

Dean added that witnesses said Los could have went into a nearby retention pond. Search crews found an article of clothing near the pond, then used a sonar to gather images underwater.

“The sonar is attached to a robotic device and it was deployed into the water and we are able to see video images of the child underwater,” Dean said. “The child was said to be at home with his mom and his aunt. They’re very distraught, naturally. It’s especially tragic to lose any loved ones, but especially a child.”

No charges have been filed at this time but Dean said the case is currently under investigation.

“It’s a tragic situation, none of our officers want to respond to this type of call but we have a duty to come out here, our primary focus was to locate this child. We were hoping for the best, but unfortunately, this tragedy occurred,” Dean said.
