‘I want justice’: Mother Furious, No Charges for Babysitter After 3-year-old Found Dead in Septic Tank

An Indiana mother is pushing for justice after officials declined to charge a family babysitter who allegedly neglected a young child while babysitting.

Jill Humphries says her daughter died tragically after getting stuck inside a septic tank on October 19, at a family member’s home in Versailles. Humphries said that her niece, a minor, was babysitting when 3-year-old Kenna Wilson managed to sneak away and open the lid to ta septic tank.

Kenna fell into the tank and was there for several hours before she was found. Investigators determined that the death was accidental and no foul play was involved.

Subsequently, no charges have been filed.

Humphries said she was at work when she received a call from her sister, who told her that Kenna was unresponsive.

“She was hysterical,” Humphries told FOX 19. “She said there’s something wrong with Kenna, she’s not moving. They’re doing CPR…I want justice. I don’t feel like any justice has been served. She neglected my child and my child ended up dead in a septic tank.”

Ripley County Prosecutor Ric Hertel told FOX 19 that Kenna had gotten away from the babysitter and made her way to the septic tank.

“My heart goes out to her, but there are some situations that are terrible accidents,” Hertel said.

The Messenger reports that Humphries recalled rocking her child for around six hours before a coroner took her daughter away.

“They all knew that she was gone when she got there,” she said. “The coroner said her body had no heat left in her.”

Humphries said there was no Christmas celebration this year for her. Two days following Kenna’s death, her sister also passed away.

Humphries is now considering filing a civil suit. For now, she continues to push for criminal charges.

“She neglected my child. And my child, in result, ended up dead in a septic tank.”

The babysitter’s name has not been released, since she’s a minor and no charges have been filed. Meanwhile, the family has set up a GoFundMe page to help with expenses.
