Georgia Police Officer Fatally Shot, Suspect in Custody

A suspect is in custody following the fatal shooting of a Georgia police officer at a local shopping center.

WSB-TV reported that Roswell police officer Jeremy Labonte, 24, responded to a complaint about a suspicious person at a shopping center along Market Boulevard on Friday night. When Officer Labonte approached 23-year-old Edward Espinoza, Espinoza pulled out a gun and immediately began shooting. According to Roswell Police Chief Jim Conroy, Espinoza fired multiple shots at Labonte.

Labonte was rushed to a local hospital but succumbed to his injuries. “One of our officers was shot and killed while serving the citizens of Roswell,” Chief Conroy stated.

Georgia Governor Brian Kemp expressed his condolences, saying he and his family are praying for the officer’s loved ones. He also urged the community to remember the heavy sacrifices that law enforcement and their families make to keep everyone safe.

“May this courageous man’s memory inspire all of us in the days, weeks, and years ahead,” he added, according to CBS News.

Espinoza has been arrested and charged with murder, aggravated assault on a law enforcement officer, and possessing a firearm during the commission of a felony.
