Dr. Sanford Sherman and his wife of three decades, Aliza Sherman, are going through a contentious divorce involving accusations of infidelity and financial misconduct. Aliza suffers another setback when her attorney is suspended, forcing her to hire new counsel. Gregory Moore of the Stafford Law Company takes over the case, but Aliza notices red flags immediately. Moore fails to prepare for court appearances and repeatedly requests continuances until the judge finally refuses to grant more delays.
The day before the trial begins, Moore texts Aliza, asking her to come to his downtown Cleveland office to discuss the case. Outside the Stafford Law Company, Aliza tells Moore she is returning to her car because of the cold.
As she walks back, a masked individual in dark clothing and gloves confronts her. The attacker circles behind Aliza, chases her, and stabs the 53-year-old more than 10 times. She is stabbed in the face, neck, right ear, and eight times in the back. After the assailant flees, the mortally wounded nurse calls 911. A bystander also calls for help. Paramedics take Aliza to the hospital, where doctors pronounce her dead from her injuries.
