Brown University Shooting: 2 Killed and 9 Injured, Person of Interest Detained

A shooter injured numerous people and killed two at Brown University in Providence, in the early evening hours Saturday.

On Saturday, at 4:22 p.m., the school went on lockdown due to an active shooter near the Barus & Holley Engineering building.

The university issued alerts, requesting everyone to lock doors, keep their phones silent, and hide. The school continued to alert students and provide updated information throughout the night.

Later in the evening, the university announced the deaths of two students. A total of nine students were taken to the hospital, with eight being in critical condition.

As of Sunday morning, one student was listed in critical condition, according to the university alerts.

“We continue to be in mourning as a community about the tragic loss of life,” Brown University officials said in an announcement. “Stole the lives of two of our students yesterday, while one remains in critical but stable condition.”

Around 11:00 p.m., the Providence Police released a video of a person wearing dark-colored clothes as a person of interest in the shooting.

Providence Deputy Chief of Police Commander Timothy O’Hara stated that the person was seen on Hope Street heading east towards the riverfront.

The entire campus remained in a shelter-in-place status until a little before 6:00 a.m. Sunday, when the University announced it had been lifted.

“Providence police have advised the University that the shelter-in-place order has ended for the entire Brown campus.”

There are still several areas closed off as part of the investigation, according to the university’s alerts.

“There continues to be limited access to some areas of campus as police continue to investigate yesterday’s shooting.”

The areas with limited access are “considered an active crime scene.”

The lifting of the shelter in place came after authorities took the person of interest into custody, and according to Providence’s chief of police, Col. Oscar Perez, no other individuals are being pursued, NBC News reported.

This is an ongoing investigation, and anyone with information is encouraged to reach out to a dedicated tip line at 401-652-5767.
