Seven Illinois children who reportedly attacked a mother and her young son last month have been criminally charged.
FOX 32 confirmed the charges Saturday with the Chicago Police Department.
On November 17, the children, ages 10 to 13, allegedly caused serious harm to a mother, 33, and her 9-year-old son, as the duo walked home from the child’s school located in South Deering, in the 10600 block of South Bensley Avenue.
ABC 7 reported that the minors include three 10-year-old boys, a 10-year-old girl, an 11-year-old girl, a 12-year-old boy, and a 13-year-old girl, according to police. The alleged beating took place down the street from Orville T. Bright Elementary.
The mother and son were taken to Trinity Hospital in serious condition.
Corshawnda Hatter, the mother, told ABC 7 that “she’s never endured such pain.”
The young victim received recognition from the community for his courage in attempting to shield his mother during the assault, FOX 32 reported.
All the minors are charged with battery, causing bodily harm. They have all been released and referred to counseling services.
Police say this is an ongoing investigation.
A video of the incident went viral. Chicago rapper Lil Zay Osama, who had viewed the video, extended his support to the victims.
