Police in Arizona believe someone abducted Nancy Guthrie (mother of “Today” show host Savannah Guthrie) from her home.
“I believe she was abducted, yes,” Pima County Sheriff Chris Nanos told CBS News. “She didn’t walk from there. She didn’t go willingly.”
Guthrie was last seen in the Catalina Foothills area outside Tucson shortly before 10 p.m. on Saturday, as CrimeOnline previously reported. She was reported missing by family around noon on Sunday.
Nanos said late Sunday that investigators “saw some things at the home that were concerning to us,” but on Monday, he said investigators believe someone took the 84-year-old from her bed.
“We believe she was taken out of the home against her will, and that’s how this investigation is moving,” he told NBC News.
Police told the network that they believe someone “harmed” Guthrie.
Nanos said the search for Guthrie has been “shut down” since police are now certain “she didn’t just walk out of there.”
“There were other things at the scene that indicate that she did not leave on her own,” he said, adding that she “could not walk 50 yards by herself.”
Nanos declined to say what investigators found in the home that led them to believe a crime had taken place.
“It would be inappropriate at this time,” he said.
