Gerhardt Konig, a former physician accused of trying to kill his wife on the Pali Puka hiking trail in O‘ahu, is on trial in Honolulu for attempted murder and assault.
On Tuesday, nuclear engineer Arielle Konig, 47, took the stand and recounted March 24, 2025, when she went with the defendant, a former Maui anesthesiologist, on a birthday excursion near the Nuʻuanu Pali Lookout.
Pali Puka is reportedly considered “one of the most dangerous” trails in the area, due to its high elevation and narrow ridgeline.
Gerard Konig, who planned the trip, gave Arielle a necklace and card before the hike. However, as they arrived at a footpath, he wanted her to stand by the cliff’s steep edge for a selfie.
Arielle Konig told the court that he became irate when she refused and began walking away.
“He grabbed me really forcefully by my upper arms. He said, ‘I’m so f****** sick of this s***, get back over there,’ and he starts pushing me back toward the cliff.”
The defendant allegedly told her to “hold still” while he pulled out a syringe and with a closed fist, tried to stab her with it. When she pushed the syringe away, Konig allegedly began hitting her in multiple times with a rock.
“Everyone knows we’re on a hike, they’ll know this wasn’t an accident and our kids will be orphans. You’ll go to jail and be dead. You have to stop,” Arielle said, recalling what she told her husband.
According to NBC News, Arielle said that in an attempt to defend herself, she squeezed his testicles and bit his upper arm.
“Shut the f— up. Nobody’s gonna hear you out here. Nobody’s coming to save you,” Gerhardt Konig allegedly said.
Two hikers, who testified last week, stumbled upon the incident and contacted 911. Arielle was taken to a hospital with multiple face lacerations.
A Queen’s Medical Center doctor also testified Tuesday, stating that Arielle arrived with tissue “crushed down to the skull,” Hawaii News Now reports, and rock pieces immersed in her skin.
The doctor added that there was no way to determine how many times she had been hit with the rock.
Arielle told the court that the had followed marriage troubles, which came about after Gerhardt Konig logged into her WhatsApp account. He then found cryptic messages between Arielle and her TerraPower coworker, Jeffrey Miller.
Arielle admitted to talking with Miller frequently but said the relationship never turned physical. Most of their conversations centered around personal issues.
The defendant began searching Arielle’s financial information and looking up divorce costs in the weeks preceding the attack.
Defense lawyer Thomas Otake, who argued that Gerhardt Konig acted in self defense, stated that Arielle had been upset that her husband found out about her “emotional affair” and “flirty” relationship with Miller.
Otake stated that Arielle initiated the fight by pushing her husband from behind while on the trail, which ended up in a scuffle between the pair, and not attempted murder.
Arielle said she and the defendant had been to couple’s therapy and had been working on their marriage.
“I felt hopeful that this was a turning point for us in our marriage, and that this was going to be a nice trip and kind of started the next chapter for us,” she said.
Arielle Konig filed for divorce in 2025. She is seeking custody of their two young children. The divorce proceedings will continue after the trial, according to Court TV.
The defendant, who has remained behind bars since his arrest, has pleaded not guilty.
