DEVELOPING: Mom, boyfriend arrested after missing toddler son’s body possibly found off remote trail

A California mother and her boyfriend are in custody on murder charges after a boy’s body was reportedly found in a remote area Thursday afternoon.

Per KBAK, a body, possibly belonging to missing 2-year-old Ramon Angel Reyes-Chavez, was found off a trail near the Democrat Hot Springs in the Kern River Canyon. The circumstances surrounding Reyes-Chavez’s presumed death remain unclear at this point in time.

“There’s been no formal confirmation as to the identity of that young boy,” Seargent Brian Holcombe said Thursday afternoon.

On Wednesday, police arrested the toddler boy’s mother, Ayled Chavez, 19, on suspicion of murder, felony child abuse, and conspiracy. A warrant was issued for Caleb Kessinger, 20, after he led Bakersfield police on a car chase Wednesday night, which ended with him crashing his vehicle and fleeing on foot, according to The Bakersfield Californian.

Wanted on homicide and felony child abuse charges, KBAK reported that Kessinger was arrested early Friday morning at a Travelodge on Oak Street. Police said the 20-year-old is being treated for injuries sustained in Wednesday’s crash.

KGET wrote that police began investigating Reyes-Chavez’s disappearance at about 8:40 p.m Wednesday. They reportedly spoke with the boy’s mother at a home on Radicchio Avenue. Amid their investigation, Bakersfield police said they obtained information which led them to believe that the 2-year-old was murdered, according to the news station.
