Teen rape victim jailed for getting abortion after older brother repeatedly sexually assaulted and impregnated her

A 15-year-old Indonesian girl who was raped by her 17-year-old brother was recently sentenced to six months behind bars for getting an abortion.

According to Sky News, police arrested the siblings in June after a headless fetus was discovered at a palm oil plantation near Pulau village. Officials said the girl was six months pregnant when she got the abortion and that her brother had raped her eight times and impregnated her in September.

Though abortion is illegal in Indonesia, the Associated Press notes that pregnancy termination is permitted in cases of rape, especially if the mother’s life is in jeopardy. However, the abortion must occur within 1 1/2 months of becoming pregnant and it must be performed by professionals.

The older brother ultimately received a two-year sentence for sexual assault of a minor. Both siblings will serve their sentence at a juvenile rehabilitation institute where they’ll receive job training. CNN reported that the teens’ mother is being investigated for allegedly helping her daughter get the abortion.

Sky News reports that prosecutors are considering appealing the sentences as they requested the girl be jailed for a year and her brother for seven years.
