Boy finds mother shot dead in family townhouse

An 8-year-old boy woke up to find his mother dead of an apparent gunshot wound Friday morning.

According to NBC Dallas Fort Worth, a neighbor in Arlington, Texas, called 911 to report that the boy came over after finding his mother unresponsive. The child was home Thursday night and reportedly didn’t hear or see anything out of the ordinary. Police said he discovered his mother’s body in her bed around 10:30 am the next morning.

The mother was later identified as 25-year-old Kenishia Walker, according to the Fort Worth Star-Telegram.

“We have counselors that were brought to the scene for the young child,” Arlington Police Lt. Christopher Cook told KXAS. “Obviously at that age, they don’t understand the gravity of the situation and really understand what’s going on. We’ve worked closely with our victims’ advocates to make sure that the child is taken care of and he’s been released to other family members.”

Police originally described the nature of Walker’s death as “suspicious.” Lt. Cook reportedly said on Saturday that they are investigating it as a murder.

Authorities suspected that the killer is possibly someone the young mother knew since there were no signs of forced entry into the home. KDFW reported that Lt. Cook believes the victim was fatally shot between 10 p.m. Thursday and 10 a.m. Friday.

Though Crime Online cannot confirm it is the same person, there is an online gift registry for someone by the name of Kenishia Walker of Arlington, Texas, at BabiesRUs. The stated due date is July 2017. Police have not said they believe the victim was pregnant.

Police reportedly said there is no record of domestic violence or emergency calls at Walker’s address within the last few months. Lt. Cook said they are interviewing family and trying to retrace the slain mother’s last 24 hours alive, according to KTVT.

WFAA reported that the 8-year-old was unharmed. Family members are currently taking care of the boy.
