Infant declared brain dead after being violently shaken and abused: Sources

An 11-month-old Queens, New York, boy was declared brain dead over the weekend after being violently shaken and abused, officials revealed Tuesday.

The New York Daily News reports that relatives called 911 Thursday afternoon after Jeremiah Callaghan vomited baby formula and fell unconscious. The child apparently passed out after coming home from the park.

Callaghan was transported to a local children’s hospital where doctors determined he had no brain activity. The 11-month-old had no history of illnesses, the Daily News noted.

Medics allegedly suspected that the child was shaken so viciously that his brain was deprived of oxygen. Doctors also reportedly discovered hemorrhaging in his eyes and bruising on his back and arms—a tell-tale sign of abuse.

Sources told the local paper that the baby lives with his grandfather, Clinton Callaghan, 54, Clinton’s wife Shanica, 29, and their three kids. The boy’s biological mother supposedly lives in Texas.

On Saturday, police reportedly executed a search warrant and confiscated computers, cell phones, and tablets from the Queens home.

Jeremiah remains in critical condition as of Tuesday, according to police. The New York Post reports that the Administration for Children’s Services has been notified.

Police told WNBC that they’ve made an arrest in connection with this case. Clinton and Shanica allegedly informed authorities that they’ve hired a lawyer.
