A Pennsylvania man who sexually assaulted six juvenile sisters he took in as “wives” was sentenced Wednesday to 30 to 87 years in prison.
The Philadelphia Inquirer reports that Bucks County Judge Jeffrey L. Finley called Lee Kaplan’s abuse “corrupt, perverted, [and] atrocious” before handing down the lengthy sentence.
In June, a court convicted Kaplan, 52, on 17 counts of child sexual assault for abusing the six oldest daughters of Daniel and Savilla Stoltzfus from 2008 until June 2016.
“I honestly believe no matter what I said or how true it was, the way of media, public opinion, politics is too great to bother argument,” Kaplan said in court, not apologizing for his actions.
As CrimeOnline previously reported, the Stolzfuses, who were Amish, “gifted” the six daughters to Kaplan. In exchange, Kaplan offered the family financial assistance as they broke away from the church.
Kaplan’s youngest victim was 7 when the abuse started. He insisted that as his “wives,” it was the duty of the girls to have sex with him, their husband. He had two children with the oldest daughter who first gave birth at 14, according to the local paper.
“Most, however, said that they considered themselves to be Kaplan’s wives in the eyes of God and that they did not believe what he had done was wrong,” District Attorney Kate Kohler said.
Police arrested Kaplan in June 2016, after locating 12 minor girls in his Feasterville home, according to the Lower Southampton Patch.
“While you may believe or have me believe that that was just a natural development of a relationship, well, I’m sorry, not in this society,” Judge Finley quipped.
In July, Daniel and Savilla were sentenced to up to seven years in prison after being convicted of one count of child endangerment each. Authorities said the children remain in the custody of the Bucks County Children and Youth Social Services Agency.
Kaplan was also deemed a sexually violent predator, meaning he must register as a sex offender for life if he’s ever released from prison.
