Newlywed officer killed, along with fellow detective only hours after wedding

After a tragic accident only hours after their wedding, the new wife of an NYPD police officer is planning her husband’s funeral instead of looking forward to their planned honeymoon in Costa Rica.

On Sunday, Katherine Berger, 32, a registered nurse from South Huntington, Rhode Island, married 31-year-old NYPD Officer Michael Colangelo at Full Moon Resort in Big Indian, a picturesque town lined with mountains in southeastern New York State.

Soon after being wed, Colangelo got into a rented Maserati with fellow NYPD detective John Martinez, 39, and a third party before the car flipped over onto its roof after hitting a tree, killing the groom and detective. The third unidentified person in the vehicle was taken to a hospital with a severe head injury but is expected to survive, according to NBC New York.

Martinez, who rented the luxury vehicle, was initially thought to have been the driver in the wreck, which occurred only about a mile from the wedding, though New York State Police said that may not have been the case.

“That’s one of the things we’re going to try to determine with the autopsy, the nature of the injuries and the point of impact will tell us more,” NYSP Major Pierce Gallagher said at a news conference Monday.

An investigation is underway, though police believe speed may have been a factor, as the road where the accident happened was a narrow country road with a 40 mph speed limit.

While authorities believe the two men killed were not wearing seat belts, the survivor was likely buckled in.

Colangelo and Martinez previously worked together in the NYPD Special Operations Division. Colangelo worked as an NYPD canine officer for 10 years, while Martinez joined the force in 2001, and was most recently assigned to the 84th Precinct in Brooklyn, authorities said at the press conference.
