DEVELOPING: Mom’s boyfriend charged with child abuse following 1-year-old girl’s death

Authorities charged a Michigan man with first-degree child abuse in connection with last week’s death of his girlfriend’s 1-year-old daughter.

According to 9&10 News, De’Marco McCovery, 22, brought the child to Otsego Memorial Hospital Thursday, where she was ultimately pronounced dead. Hospital staff determined the child’s death was suspicious and called police. McCovery was arrested that night.

Michigan State Police Sergeant Randy Servia alleged the 22-year-old was the last person seen with the child. McCovery is also accused of making several stops before taking the toddler to the hospital. However, it’s currently unclear what those stops entailed.

While authorities haven’t disclosed many details concerning the victim, a GoFundMe page identified the slain toddler as Alannah Rose-Marie Newman.

The local news station claimed to have spoken to the victim’s mother, who said she’s too devastated to appear on camera.

An autopsy will be performed to ascertain the 1-year-old’s cause of death. Meanwhile, McCovery is being held on $500,000 bond and was ordered to have no contact with the deceased girl’s mother. He’s due in court July 12.

Chief assistant prosecuting attorney Manda Bruker told WPBN, “A death like this was completely preventable and certainly, the family is struggling right now and it’s difficult for the whole community when you have something like this.”
