High-ranking Air Force officer busted in FBI child sex sting after allegedly trying to meet underage girl at hotel

An FBI sting resulted in the arrest of a lieutenant colonel in the Air Force who’s accused of trying to meet a 14-year-old girl at a hotel after he met her online.

The Atlanta Journal-Constitution reported that Willie Newson, 47, was placed on leave following his arrest Tuesday night at the Radisson in Marietta. Newson is facing child exploitation charges for allegedly meeting the girl on a dating app.

The “teen girl” ended up being an undercover officer with the FBI Metro Atlanta Child Exploitation Task Force. An arrest warrant obtained by the newspaper’s sister station WSB-TV stated that the undercover officer “gave Newson the opportunity to stop communicating several times.”

WSB-TV reported that Newson was one of eight people arrested at the local hotel within a three-hour period. Police said the other seven suspects taken into custody Tuesday were either pimps or prostitutes.

Speaking with the Journal-Constitution, Georgia Department of Defense spokeswoman Desiree Bamba confirmed they’re aware of the situation but said all questions regarding the incident should be directed to investigating authorities.

Newson was freed from custody after posting $20,000 bail, according to jail records.

“Lieutenant Colonel Newson’s alleged actions do not reflect the values we uphold in the Georgia National Guard,” Bamba said.
