Relative has 11-year-old girl drive herself to elementary school while he sits in passenger seat, police say

Police in Illinois are searching for a man who they said let an 11-year-old relative drive herself and a friend to elementary school while he sat in the passenger seat.

People reported that Khafilu Oshodi, 31, is wanted for child endangerment and driving with a suspended license after W.J. Murphy Elementary School staff saw the little girl drive herself to the premises on January 9. Witnesses reportedly claimed they saw her get out from behind the wheel at a drop-off point with a 9-year-old boy who also exited the vehicle.

Oshadi allegedly slid over from the passenger seat and drove off before authorities arrived.

“Drop-off and pickup are the busiest times of the school day. Numerous children, staff and parents are present in the drop-off area. This irresponsible behavior could’ve resulted in any number of tragic scenarios,” Round Lake Park Police Chief George Filenko said, according to the Daily Herald.

Police said they’ve reached out to Oshadi on multiple occasions with “no success.” Amid their investigation, they learned Oshadi’s license was suspended and the car he made the 11-year-old drive was a former rental that was reported stolen on January 14, according to People.

Filenko said, “We gave him every opportunity in the world. We had no choice but to get the warrant.”

This is an ongoing investigation. Anyone with information regarding Khafilu Oshodi’s whereabouts should call Round Lake Park police at 847- 270-9111.
