DEVELOPING: Baby boy is DEAD after head trauma caused by babysitter, family member claims [Reports]

Authorities in Virginia are investigating the death of a 5-month-old boy who was reportedly found unresponsive late last month.

WRIC reported that police found the infant, only identified as Austin, at a home off of the 1900 block of Old Tavern Road in Powhatan on March 27. A relative told the news station that CPR was performed before he was transported to the hospital.

A family member claimed doctors said Austin suffered head trauma. Relatives said they believe the infant’s injuries were the result of abuse he suffered while in a babysitter’s care.

"An investigation into the circumstance surrounding the infant’s condition is ongoing."

The family also told WRIC that Austin had been brain-dead since March 27 but was on life support while his organs were removed for donations. The medical examiner’s office confirmed the 5-month-old’s death to the news station on Tuesday.

No arrests have been made in connection with the infant’s death.

“An investigation into the circumstance surrounding the infant’s condition is ongoing,” Powhatan County police Captain Jeffery Searfoss said Sunday afternoon in a news release, according to WTVR. “No further information will be released at this time.”
