Abusive father follows teen daughter & niece as they try to flee, shoots them dead: Reports

Suspect Abdool Zaman reportedly had a baby with his slain niece months before the double slaying

A father who allegedly shot and killed his daughter and niece last year was recently indicted in Virginia on capital murder charges for the double slaying.

WRIC reported that Abdool Z. Zaman is facing two counts of capital murder for the December 13, 2018, slayings of his daughter, Vanessa Zaman, 18, and niece, Leona Samlall, 18, (pictured right, center) at a Henrico County apartment complex. Zaman, who was apprehended in Queens, New York, days after the murders, has remained jailed without bond since his arrest.

Authorities haven’t revealed a motive for the two murders. However, on a GoFundMe page for Vanessa, her mother, Saveeta Barnes, alleged that Abdool wasn’t around for most of their daughter’s life and that she reached out to him when she turned 18.

Barnes told the Richmond Times-Dispatch that Samlall was living with Zaman in Orlando when Vanessa moved in with them. WTVR reported that Samlall was briefly on a missing person’s list but turned up in Orlando, Florida.

“Even after telling her countless times that he was not a good person, she still went ahead and moved in with him. Her life took a tragic turn, when she found out that he was abusing his girlfriend,” Barnes wrote.

According to WRIC, Barnes claimed her daughter was protecting Samlall and her then-3-month-old baby, whom Abdool reportedly fathered. The Times-Dispatch explained that Vanessa and Samlall were cousins as Samlall’s mother married Abdool’s brother.

Barnes said her daughter took Samlall to her mother in Virginia—unaware that Abdool was following them.

Sources told WTVR that Abdool exited his vehicle and confronted his daughter and niece before shooting them dead in a fit of rage. A medical examiner ultimately determined both women died from gunshot wounds to the head.

The news station reported that Abdool had fought extradition but was taken back to Virginia on March 28. He’s facing capital murder charges for allegedly killing more than one person in a single criminal act and for killing more than one person within a three-year period.
