Mom caught trying smother infant in Walmart parking lot after threatening suicide on Facebook: Police

A woman in Florida was arrested Tuesday evening, accused of trying to suffocate her 6-month-old baby in a Walmart parking lot.

As reported by TC Palm, Indian River County deputies were informed of a post on Aniyah Thomas’ Facebook profile in which she allegedly threatened to kill herself and her child. Brevard County police then pinged her cellphone to a Walmart in Vero Beach, where they located her vehicle in the supermarket’s parking lot, according to the Sebastian Daily.

Authorities were said to have found Thomas, 19, in the driver’s seat with the infant, who she had placed put facedown on her chest.

“Aniyah then wrapped her right arm around the back of the infant’s head and wrapped her left arm around the upper torso of the infant in a hugging position. Aniyah started to squeeze the infant, which appeared to be suffocating,” they wrote.

After making verbal commands for her to stop, the responding deputy reportedly shattered the driver’s side window and retrieved the baby. Thomas was apprehended and charged with felony child abuse and resisting arrest without violence.

TC Palm reports that Thomas is being held at Indian River County Jail without bond. Her infant child is reportedly being cared for by relatives.
