Parents jailed for repeatedly skipping toddler son’s crucial follow-up appointments after lifesaving liver transplant: Docs

The parents of a one-year-old boy in New Mexico who underwent a liver transplant last year were arrested Monday for allegedly failing to take their son to his follow-up doctor’s appointments.

KOAT reported that Kyla and Jason Witterman were charged with child abuse for not only forgoing their son’s doctor’s appointments after his April 2018 procedure, but failing to give him his required anti-rejection medications.

Court documents obtained by the news station stated that the boy’s doctor reported the parents to authorities after they missed several appointments, leading police to visit their San Juan County home. The New Mexico Children, Youth & Families Department reportedly got involved shortly thereafter.

A San Juan District Attorney’s Office spokesperson told KOAT that the boy and his 13-year-old brother are currently staying with a family member but are in the state’s custody. The toddler was said to be in good health.
