A man in Florida was arrested earlier this month after an argument over slavery role-playing reportedly resulted in him spitting in his black girlfriend’s face.
A probable cause affidavit by obtained by The Smoking Gun stated that Ashley Edwards, 35, asked Kenneth Atkins, 37, to play “slave and slaver because she is African American and he is Caucasian.” The Manatee County Sheriff’s Office’s report alleged that Atkins became “verbally aggressive” following her request—with tensions rising to the point that he spat in Edwards’ face.
Edwards, who wasn’t injured, reportedly declined to provide a statement to police as she did not want her boyfriend to go to jail. According to the news outlet, Edwards is currently on probation for a felony theft conviction.
The Smoking Gun noted that Atkins has a lengthy rap sheet which includes convictions for grand theft, burglary, battery, loitering, and drug possession. At the time of the August 6 incident, he was free on bond for a felony grand theft charge for allegedly stealing items from Walmart.
Atkins was charged with misdemeanor battery. He is reportedly allowed “consensual contact” with Edwards following his release from custody.
