BREAKING: Missing 10-year-old girl found strangled in shed behind home [Police]

An Indiana girl whose reported disappearance on Saturday sparked a statewide SILVER Alert has been found dead in a shed located behind her family home, police announced on Wednesday.

Skylea Carmack, 10, was reportedly found dead in a plastic bag hidden inside a shed located at her Gas City home. Police made the grisly discovery on Wednesday morning while searching where Carmack was last seen alive, according to WDRB.

Carmack was said to have vanished from her home on Saturday at around 4 p.m. Her father, Kevin Carmack, told WXIN that he was at work Saturday and the 10-year-old was left with her six siblings and her stepmother, Amanda Carmack, 34.

Amanda Carmack allegedly waited until that evening to report her stepdaughter’s disappearance. WDRB reported that Child Protective Services removed the six other children from the home due to her delay in reporting the girl missing.

Kevin Carmack previously told WXIN that he believed his daughter had run away from home because she was upset about being grounded. He claimed she had a history of running away, but that she usually went to his mother’s home.

Indiana State Police Seargent Tony Slocum told People magazine that they are reviewing surveillance footage from surrounding homes, but the girl has not been captured in any video so far.

Police believe Skylea Carmack was strangled sometime between 4:30 and 6 p.m. on Saturday. Authorities issued a statewide SILVER Alert for her on Sunday.

Though AMBER Alerts are typically issued when missing children are considered endangered, SILVER Alerts are used when an elderly person or someone with a cognitive disability vanishes.

Officials haven’t revealed the nature of Skylea Carmack’s disability, but her father told the news station that she disappeared with an autism awareness blanket.

Police said a “conglomerate of evidence” led them to arrest Amanda Carmack, who they believe acted alone. She has been charged with murder, neglect of a dependent resulting in death, domestic battery resulting in death, and strangulation.

An autopsy will be performed to confirm Skylea Carmack’s cause of death. A motive remains unclear.

Sloccum said, “There’s no rationale…That’s just cowardice.”
