Marquis Jefferson, father a 28-year-old Texas woman who was shot and killed in her own home by a Fort Worth police officer last month, has died, sources have told CBS DFW.

The cause of his death was not immediately known.

Atatiana Jefferson was playing video games in her home with her 8-year-old nephew on October 5 when then-Officer Aaron Dean shot her through the window of her bedroom, as CrimeOnline previously reported. Dean resigned before he could be fired and was later charged with murder.

A neighbor had called the Fort Worth Police Department’s non-emergency line and requested a wellness check when he noticed Jefferson’s front door open and the lights on. Dean and another officer responded to the call; Dean went to the back of the house, where he saw Jefferson’s silhouette in the window. He ordered her to show her hands and almost immediately fired a single shot.

Marquis Jefferson temporarily halted his daughter’s funeral last month because he felt he had been blocked from participating. The parties settled their dispute and the service was held later.
