2-month-old boy dies from abuse; his father is in custody

A 2-month-old baby boy admitted to a California hospital earlier this week has died from his injuries, the Stockton Police Department said.

Police began an investigation on Wednesday, when staff at the UC Davis Medical Center reported that the infant had been admitted with serious “injuries consistent with child abuse.” The baby, in pediatric intensive care, was not expected to survive.

Detectives arrested the baby’s father, 24-year-old Matthew Garcia, on Friday after learning the abuse took place at the family’s residence. Garcia was charged at that time with felony child abuse and booked into the San Joaquin County Jail.
