5-year-old girl dies from gunshot to the face

Fatal shot believed to have been fired by another child; the owner of the gun has been arrested.

A 5-year-old Georgia girl died Friday afternoon after she was shot in the face by another child who found a loaded gun, Dekalb County Police told Fox 5 Atlanta.

Police have arrested the owner of the gun, 36-year-old Chad Brooks Sr., who has been charged with second-degree murder and cruelty to children.

“Even grown men feel sad and want to cry when they see things like this,” DeKalb County Police Major A.T. Mears said.

On Saturday, police said they were still working to piece to together the story of how the shooting took place and have not determined who fired the fatal shot. There were several children at the home in Lithonia, a small town east of Atlanta, at the time, they said.

“Her life didn’t get to start yet, neighbor Naomi Lyons told Fox 5. “Her life didn’t even start.”

Police were called to the scene at about 3:30 p.m. Friday afternoon and found the girl, who has not been named, with a gunshot wound to the face. She was rushed to Children’s Healthcare of Atlanta at Egleston, where she died from her wounds.

“Be responsible if you have weapons,” Mears said. “If you have guns and children make sure you are responsible and take care of those things. Look after the children.”
