Ex-husband gets attempted murder charge after breaking into former wife’s home

A 36-year-old Colorado man allegedly broke into his ex-wife’s home early Sunday and fired at least one shot, Fox 21 News reports.

David Barnes has been charged with burglary and attempted murder in the incident, which took place near Pike Park in north Colorado Springs.

A woman called 911 around 1 a.m. Sunday morning to report someone breaking into her house. The dispatcher on the call heard a disturbance and then a gunshot.

When officers arrived, the woman told them Barnes was still inside the house. Officers found him and took him into custody without incident.

The woman said that Barnes broke into her house and began fighting with her. The gun discharged during the fighting.

Police said they found a handgun inside the home and that no one was injured by the gunshot.

No further details were released.

Barnes is being held in the El Paso County Jail without bond, according to jail records.
