Newborn infant’s body found buried in basement of abandoned house

Canadian police on Wednesday found the body of a newborn baby buried in the basement of an abandoned home in Hamilton, CTV New Toronto reports.

Two people believed to be the baby’s parents have been arrested.

Nathan O’Brien, 34, and Winnie Ensor, 24, have been charged with criminal negligence causing death and interfering with a dead body, police said on Thursday.

Hamilton police responded to the boarded up home in the northeast of the city just after midnight after receiving a report about a baby buried there.

“The tragic scenario that’s gone on here – one that no police officer or individual wants to deal with — but it’s the one that we are,” Det. Mike Ebert said.

Ebert said a forensic anthropologist was assisting in the investigation and that an autopsy would determine the cause of the death of the infant.

Angela Marcy, who lives in the neighborhood, told CTV News that squatters often set up house in the abandoned building and that police have been frequently called.

“I am not surprised,” Marcy said. “Nothing would surprised me” about that house.
