Toddler killed by neighbor’s dogs; mother seriously hurt

A 3-year-old boy was attacked and killed Tuesday by his neighbor’s dogs, and his mother was seriously injured.

Authorities in Carteret, New Jersey, have not released the names of the victims, but said the incident took place Tuesday afternoon when the dogs apparently jumped their fence and ran into the victims’ back yard.

The toddler was flown to the hospital, where he died, and the mother was taken by ambulance, ABC7 reported. She remains hospitalized.

Carteret Mayor Daniel Reiman said that the two dogs, described as pit bulls, were not registered as required by law. They were both euthanized after the attack.

“As a small community, our Carteret family mourns the heart-wrenching loss of our young neighbor,” he said. “We pray for this young mother and family in this time of unimaginable grief.”

Neighbors said the dogs have been a nuisance for some time.

“Those pit bulls bit people all in this area,” one neighbor said. “I’m aware of certain houses, so I try to walk a different path when I know that they’re on that block.”

Other neighbors said the dogs were frequently roaming the streets freely; one said she’s called authorities several times about them.
