Boyfriend flees with 4-month-old baby after murdering infant’s mom and her nephew

A Louisiana man shot and killed his girlfriend and her nephew Monday then fled across state lines with his 4-month old child.

Eric Derell Smith, 30, was holding onto the baby while firing at police who were pursuing along Interestate 10 into Mississippi, where Biloxi Police Chief John Miller told WLOX the chase ended with Smith dead.

Miller did not explain how he died, but police said the baby was now in stable condition at Merit Hospital in Biloxi.

East Baton Rouge Sheriff’s deputies responded to a home in Baker, Louisiana, at about 11:30 a.m. after someone called 911 and hung up the phone, according to WBRZ. The deputies found Christin Parker, 32, and her nephew Brandon Parker, 26, dead from gunshot wounds inside. The baby was Christin Parker’s child with Smith.

Police said Smith fled the scene in a blue Nissan that turned up on Mississippi Department of Transportation cameras at about 3 p.m. A trail of police vehicles took off in pursuit, attempting to bring Smith safely to a stop nearly 160 miles from the scene of the double murder in Louisiana.

Biloxi police and other agencies are still on the scene and have released no further information about the end of the chase. Witnesses, however, told WXXV there was gunfire.
