A news station has obtained witness video of a police chase and shootout with a double-murder suspect that killed the suspect and led to the death of his infant soon, who was in the car.
As CrimeOnline previously reported, Eric Derrell Smith, 30, was fatally shot by police Monday in Mississippi after he allegedly shot his ex-girlfriend and her nephew early that day in Baker, Louisiana, before fleeing with his four-month old son. Police followed Smith on a slow-speed chase into Mississippi where a brief shootout ensued, killing Smith. The baby was injured and was initially listed in stable condition. But on Tuesday, police confirmed that the baby, since identified as La’Mello Parker, had died.
According to WWL-TV, police used spikes to slow Smith’s car down, and an officer in a patrol car pushed the suspect’s Nissan off I-10 in Biloxi and onto a median.
WWL-TV obtained witness video showing the resulting shootout, which appeared to last only a few seconds. According to the report, Smith appeared to point a gun out of his window before officers fired at him and the vehicle.
Police have not yet confirmed if the infant died from being shot or other injuries.
“The juvenile did receive injuries and was taken to a local medical facility for treatment. Despite the efforts of medical staff, the child passed away as a result of the injuries sustained. As stated, the investigation is ongoing at this time. Once a thorough investigation is completed the details will be released to the District Attorney’s Office for review,” the Biloxi Police Department said in a statement obtained by WLOX on Tuesday.
Biloxi Police Chief John Miller reportedly would not confirm to The Advocate on Tuesday how the baby died, and said more information would likely be available on Wednesday.
Before the chase and shooting, Smith allegedly killed his ex-girlfriend, 32-year old Christin Parker, and her nephew Brandon Parker, 26. According to WTOX, Christin Parker was the baby’s mother.
As previously reported, one officer has been placed on administrative leave.
CrimeOnline will provide further updates when more information is available.
