Suspect Dies in Police Custody After Shooting Ex-Girlfriend in the Face, Stealing Car With Mother and 4 Kids Inside

A California domestic violence suspect died in police custody after shooting an ex-girlfriend in the face and carjacking a vehicle with a mother and four children inside.

The ex-girlfriend, who has not been named, has been hospitalized in critical condition.

Fresno police, who have not named the suspect, said one of the children in the carjacked vehicle faked an asthma attack, prompting the suspect to pull over and kick the family out of the car, ABC30 reported.

About 90 minutes later, police responded to a call about a man acting erratically and found it was the domestic violence suspect. They tried to take him into custody, but he fought with officers, who Tased him.

Officers used three sets of handcuffs to restrain him and then noticed he was having breathing difficulties. Police took him to a hospital, where he was later pronounced dead.

Police said the incident began just before noon when the man went to his ex-girlfriend’s home, walked into her bedroom, and shot her. Then he left the home and carjacked the family.

Police said the child who faced the asthma attack was “very, very smart.”
