Murdaugh Murders: Dad Alex Murdaugh Quits Law Firm, Enters Rehab After Being Shot in Head

Legal scion Alex Murdaugh has resigned from his law firm and will enter rehab after reportedly suffering a superficial gunshot wound to the head on Saturday in South Carolina.

On Monday, Murdaugh’s attorney, Dick Harpootlian, issued a statement to WCSC on Murdaugh’s behalf. It reads in full:

“The murders of my wife and son have caused an incredibly difficult time in my life. I have made a lot of decisions that I truly regret. I’m resigning from my law firm and entering rehab after a long battle that has been exacerbated by these murders. I am immensely sorry to everyone I’ve hurt including my family, friends, and colleagues. I ask for prayers as I rehabilitate myself and my relationships.”

As CrimeOnline previously reported, Murdaugh called 911 on Saturday and said he had been shot in rural Hampton County. The Hampton County Sheriff’s Office asked the State Law Enforcement Division (SLED) to take over the investigation into Murdaugh’s shooting.

SLED is also in the process of investigating June’s shooting deaths of the lawyer’s wife and son, Maggie and Paul Murdaugh, 52 and 22. About two years before his death, son Paul was involved in a 2019 boating accident that killed Mallory Beach, 19.

In addition to Saturday’s shootings, no arrests have been made in connection with Maggie and Paul Murdaugh’s deaths.

SLED spokesman Tommy Crosby said Alex Murdaugh is being hospitalized for a superficial gunshot wound to the head. Despite Monday’s statement, authorities have not yet disclosed whether his injuries were self-inflicted.
