Elderly Man’s Decomposed Body Found in ‘Hoarder Home’ He Shared With Wife: Reports

On Saturday, New York police reportedly found an elderly man’s decomposed body in an apartment he shared with his wife.

Brent Shapiro, 84, died of arteriosclerotic cardiovascular disease at least two months earlier, but his 72-year-old wife allegedly planned to wait a year before reporting his death. However, police performing a welfare check at the Brooklyn residence — which was described as trash-filled — discovered Shapiro’s body two hours after responding to the scene, according to the New York Daily News.

“Floor to ceiling, classic hoarder situation,” a police source told the news outlet. “Feces, all sorts of debris. He was found on a pile of garbage.”

Police said the Shapiros’ two adult sons requested the welfare check that led to the grisly discovery. According to the New York Post, the sons said their parents had “poor mental conditions” and their father had been bed-ridden for years.

The mother reportedly told her sons she was hospitalized, prompting them to request the welfare check.

The Daily News reported that Shapiro’s wife is undergoing psychiatric evaluation.
