3-Year-Old Boy Shot Dead in Downtown Montgomery

A 3-year-old Alabama boy died Friday afternoon after what Montgomery Mayor Steven Reed called “a senseless act of gun-related violence.”

Police responded at about 1:45 p.m. to an intersection just a few blocks from the Alabama State Capitol in downtown Montgomery — although they believe the shooting took place a few blocks north of that intersection, the Montgomery Advertiser reported.

The found 3-year-old Ja’Seyon Green with a life-threatening gunshot wound and rushed him to a nearby hospital. The little boy was pronounced dead a few hours later, Montgomery Police Capt. Saba Coleman said.

Although police have not revealed details about the shooting, interim Police Chief Ramona Harris condemned the shooter.

“An innocent 3-year-old lost his life as a result of the irresponsible actions of a person who does not value the life of another,” Harris said. “This type of violent behavior that lacks due regard to the general public must stop immediately.”

Reed echoed Harris’s statement.

“Today, we bear a deep sorrow as we collectively grieve the loss of an innocent, young life due to a senseless act of gun-related violence,” he said. “Words are not enough to extinguish the pain of these actions. They never are. …

“Gun-related violence is a national issue that continues to knock at our city’s front door. My administration remains committed to doing everything we can to stop this unbearable trend by getting illegal weapons off our streets and interrupting the cycle of violence that impacts too many families,” Reed said.

Harris called for anyone with information to contact CrimeStoppers at 334-215-STOP, Secret Witness at 334-625-4000, or MPD at 334-625-2831.
