‘She Didn’t Deserve This’: Bullied 14-Year-Old Girl Dies Days After Suicide Attempt

A 14-year-old Missouri girl died on Thursday, days after a suicide attempt that her mother said stemmed from bullying at school.

Spirit Butler’s mother, Mary, reportedly found her unresponsive on the floor on August 8 — days before she was expected to start high school. The teen was on life support before succumbing to her injuries.

Spirit’s mother reportedly had multiple meetings with school staff about ongoing physical, emotional, and online bullying targeting her daughter. The mother alleged that Spirit has been bullied since sixth grade. She also claimed she spoke to officials when it started, and a counselor was supposed to have one-on-one time with Spirit.

According to the mother, the bullying continued and the school staff never intervened. She said that Spirit started acting out in school to get suspended and avoid being bullied.

“I feel like my baby just gave up,” the mother commented. “My baby hung herself in the closet.”

Riverview Gardens School District previously declined to comment on the nature of the allegations posed by Spirit’s mother, citing student privacy concerns.
