Florida Woman Clings to Life After She’s Found With Hatchet in Her Head

A Florida man has been charged with attempted murder after deputies found a woman on Tuesday with a hatchet buried in her head.

Family members said Lisa Rogers Eaton’s injury is so severe that they have come to Florida to say their good-byes and support her husband’s decision to have her taken off life support.

Pinellas County deputies were called to Eaton’s St. Petersburg home at about 10:30 a.m. on Tuesday. The 56-year-old woman was taken to a hospital, WFLA reported.

Deputies said the suspect, identified as 40-year-old Michael Dougherty, fled before they arrived. He was later located near Gainesville and arrested by Alachua County deputies during a traffic stop at about 3 a.m. on Thursday.

Eaton’s sister, Donna Voye, told WFLA that Eaton and her husband had allowed Dougherty to stay with them after he lost his job.

“We don’t understand it,” Voye said. “We can’t understand it because she wouldn’t hurt anybody.”

The Pinellas County Sheriff’s Office said it is still investigating.

Dougherty remained jailed in Alachua County on Saturday afternoon, according to jail records.
