1 Dead, 9 Hurt in Alabama New Year’s Eve Shooting

One person was shot to death and nine other wounded Saturday night as thousands of revelers gathered on the streets of Mobile, Alabama, to ring in the new year.

Mobile police identified the slain victim as a 24-year-old man who was pronounced dead on Dauphin Street about 45 minutes before the city’s “MoonPie” drop to signify the beginning of 2023.

Police said the wounded victims ranged in age from 17 to 57 and were taken to nearby hospitals. Their injuries ranged from non-life-threatening to severe. Two businesses were also hit by the gunfire, police said.

Investigators cordoned off the immediate crime scene, just across Bienville Square from MoonPie Over Mobile’s main stage, and the New Year’s festivities continued,

Mobile Police Chief Paul Prine told WKRG the unknown shooter — or shooters — and the fatal victim “may have been known to one another.”

“I think that would give some comfort to all of us downtown that this was not just a random shooting where someone lost their life,” he said.

Investigators asked anyone with information to contact the Mobile Police Department at 251-208-7211, send an anonymous tip, or text 844-251-0644 or mobilepd.org/crimetip.
