Utah Man Admits Rape, Sodomy of Toddler, Giving her Gonorrhea

A Utah man has been arrested after he reportedly confessed to raping and sodomizing a toddler in 2021.

Steven Johnson, 25, has been charged with two counts of rape of a child and one count of sodomy of a child, a probable cause affidavit says, according to KSL.

Investigators first looked at the case in February 2021 after the then-2-year-old girl’s mother noticed some “irregularities” and took her to a hospital, A doctor told the mother that the little girl tested positive for gonorrhea, adding that the disease was “sure evidence of sexual abuse.”

But prosecutors said there wasn’t enough evidence to move forward with a prosecution at that time, so they case sat until January 17, when a West Valley Police Department investigators got a phone call from a person who said they had a video of Johnson’s confession.

Detectives learned that the more than 20 minute long video was recorded on December 29, 2021. In it, Johnson says he must have contracted gonorrhea from someone he was with at the time and explained how he abused the little girl.

Police said the person who recorded the video didn’t report it right away because “they did not want to cause further trauma to the victim.”

Investigators arranged a phone call between Johnson and victim’s mother, and Johnson against confessed and apologized. He reportedly texted the victim’s mother, saying, “I have sins to confess.”

Johnson was taken into custody on January 31. The affidavit says that Johnson admitted to police abusing the girl on two occasions and that he told investigators he would be a potential flight risk and a danger to the victim and the public if he were to be released.
