Deputy Hit by Stolen U-Haul Truck, Suspect Shot in the Leg

Two people are in custody in Florida after an incident involving a stolen U-Haul truck that struck a deputy and an officer-involved shooting.

Palm Beach County Sheriff’s Office spokesperson Teri Barbera said the incident began just before 4 a.m. in Royal Palm Beach when deputies initiated a traffic stop on the stolen rental truck, according to WPTV.

The deputies arrested 27-year-old James Boswell on an out-of-state warrant, Barbera said. But while the deputies were engaged with Boswell, Barbera said, a passenger — later identified as 31-year-old Ginger Taylor — slid over to the driver’s seat and fled the scene.

Authorities found the stolen truck at the Royal Inn Hotel just before 5 a.m. and tried to make contact with Taylor. She again fled the scene in the truck, driving at the deputy and hitting him. He fired at the fleeing vehicle.

She drove for a few blocks before crashing into the fence of a home.

Taylor got out of the truck and ran toward the back of the home with deputies pursuing. The quickly caught up with her, and she was taken to a hospital for treatment of a gunshot wound to the leg.

Barbera said she’ll be charged with aggravated battery on a law enforcement officer, reckless fleeing and eluding, aggravated fleeing and eluding, reckless driving, and resisting with violence.

The sheriff’s office says she, too, has outstanding out-of-state warrants.

The deputy who was hit by the truck was treated for minor injuries. He was put on administrative leave for the investigation into the shooting, which is being conducted by the Florida Department of Law Envorcement, violent crimes detectives, and the state’s attorney’s office.

Boswell was jailed on a $10,000 bond.
