23-Year-Old Canadian Woman Found Dead in Hotel During ‘Dream Birthday Vacation’ to Mexico

A Canadian woman visiting Mexico for her birthday was found dead last week, and her boyfriend is being investigated for the crime.

The Secretariat of Public Security in the city of Solidaridad said that “a lifeless woman was found with possible marks of violence in a hotel located in the Xcalacoco neighborhood,” the Vancouver Sun reported.

The woman was identify by family as Kiara Agnew, 23, from British Columbia.

Katlyn Levesque, Agnew’s aunt, told the Toronto Star that her niece and her boyfriend, 26-year-old Ryan Friesen arrived at their resort south of Cancun last Thursday for what a GoFundMe set up for the family describes as “a dream birthday vacation.”

“It was for her birthday. She was really excited for the sailing and snorkeling and visiting the Mayan ruins,” said Levesque.

Details on Agnew’s death have not been released, and family members said they are awaiting autopsy results.

Mexican prosecutors charges against Friesen are under consideration.

Friesen plays for the North Peace Hockey League team, the Dawson Creek Canucks.
