‘Best Friend’ Charged with Murder of Las Vegas Man

A 20-year-old Las Vegas man was shot and stabbed to death on Sunday afternoon, allegedly by his best friend.

Las Vegas police said they conducted a welfare check Sunday night and found Chris McCrary dead from “an apparent gunshot wound.” The Clark County coroner later determined McCrary had multiple gunshot and stab wounds, KVVU reported.

On Wednesday, police announced they had arrested Paul Abercrombie, 20, on a charge of open murder with a deadly weapon. He was booked “in abstentia” into the Clark County jail, which generally means that a suspect is hospitalized, but police offered no explanation.

McCrary’s mother, Qiantas McCrary, told KVVU that she was shocked both at her son’s death and the suspect in his killing.

“Paul’s been at my house dozens of times,” she told KVVU. “He ate with us. Joked with us.”

“Chris and Paul called each other twins because they looked so much alike,” she said.

Qiantas McCrary said she was at a loss in more ways than one. She suffers from lupus, she said, and her son has always been there to do the things she couldn’t when the disease flares.

“Chris picks me up and takes me up to the car,” McCary said. “He makes sure I take my medicine. He makes sure I get to my appointments. He picks up my medication.”

Police have not mentioned a motive for the murder. Abercrombie is due in court on Monday.
