Mother Accused of Giving Birth in Hospital Restroom, Leaving Newborn to Die in Trash Can

A 19-year-old New Mexico woman was charged with murder this week, accused of giving birth in a hospital bathroom and leaving the baby in a trash can to die.

Police said that Alexee Trevizo went to a hospital emergency room in Artesia in January, complaining of back pains. Medical staff told her she was pregnant.

Staff told investigators that Trevizo locked herself in a bathroom, where she allegedly gave birth to a baby boy, tied him up in a trash bag, and hid him beneath the trash in the can.

He had suffocated by the time he was found early in the morning on January 27. The state Office of the Medical Investigator deemed the newborn’s death a homicide on March 28, and the Artesia Police Department presented its evidence to the district attorney’s office on that day.

Criminal charges were approved on Wednesday, and Trevizo was arrested on charges of first degree murder and tampering with evidence.

No other information was released.
