Indiana Toddler Dies After Shooting Himself; 25-Year-Old Man Charged With Neglect

A 25-year-old Indiana man was arrested Friday for neglect after a toddler found a loaded gun and fatally shot himself.

Indianapolis Metropolitan Police said the boy was shot Friday night and taken to Riley Children’s Hospital in critical condition, but he later died from his injuries, WISH reported.

Jahbar Scott was charged with neglect of a dependent causing death.

Police said both the boy’s parents were at the scene when they arrived just after 9 p.m. and cooperated, although they did not say explain Scott’s relationship with the toddler.

Police, who didn’t provide the boy’s age, said his gunshot was “self-inflicted and accidental” but they are still investigating to determine exactly how a toddler came into possession of a loaded weapon and pulled the trigger.

No further information was provided. The Marion County Prosecutor’s Office will determine final charges.
